Specialty & Approach
I believe that just as our bodies possess resources for healing when injured, our mental and psychological processes naturally move toward health when given the opportunity. In the context of a supportive relationship and a safe setting, my therapeutic role is to provide the possibility for healing. I don’t have all the answers, but between your self-understanding, willingness to try, and my knowledge and experience as a therapist, we can work together toward your goals.
While earning a doctoral degree in clinical psychology at Michigan State University, my early training focused on psychodynamic theory along with an emphasis on children and family systems. My continuing education hours have covered a range of intervention approaches including divorce mediation, cognitive-behavioral interventions, ego state work and the use of imagery. The most extensive aspect of my on-going training has been the use of EMDR, beginning with initial training in the early 1990s, certification and then continued education through seminars and peer consultation groups. In cooperation with other psychotherapists, I sometimes provide concurrent EMDR treatment for individuals as they continue work with their primary therapist.
In my 35 years of private practice, I have treated adults, families and children. Consequently, I remain aware of the relationships and family systems in which my clients live; however, currently I primarily provide individual treatment for adult women. I am also pleased to have the opportunity to serve as a community supervisor for practicum students in the MSU doctoral program for clinical psychology.
